Russian Federation government is the founder of Far Eastern State Transport University. Federal Agency of Railway Transport is authorized to fulfill the duties of the founder of the university according to the Russian Federation government’s order №1753r from 31.12.2004.
FESTU was originally established as the Khabarovsk Institute of Railway Engineers (KhabIIZhT) on September 8th, 1937. It was the first technical college in the Soviet Far East aimed at training of qualified personnel for the railroads of the East Siberian and Far Eastern regions of Russia.
Historical milestones:
September 1st 1939 – Khabarovsk Institute of Railway Engineers accepted first intake of students.
July 29th 1944 – the first 84 graduates received their diplomas of engineers in leading specialties: construction of railways, locomotives and locomotive stock, traffic and freight transportation.
September 1967 – Faculty of professional development was established at FESTU in order to retrain managerial personnel of Far Eastern Railways.
1993 – KhabIIZhT was reorganized in Far Eastern State Transport Academy (FESTA).
1997 – FESTA was promoted a rank of university and renamed into Far Eastern State Transport University (FESTU).
Nowadays FESTU is the largest polytechnical university in the Russian Far East. The University consists of 9 institutes and 5 faculties in Khabarovsk, and has branch offices in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Tynda, Svobodny, Ussuriysk and Neryungri.
Over 23,000 students are studying at FESTU today. The University provides comfortable environment for research work and studying. The book fund of the university library is regularly updated and now numbers more than 1.2 million copies. The University has well-developed sport facilities: 7 gyms, track-and-field arena, swimming pool, climbing wall, stadium and grounds for outdoor sports. The University has 5 comfortable hostels for students and graduate students.
Teaching staff of the University exceeds 700 people. The majority of the university teachers have scientific degrees and titles, including more than 100 doctors and professors. Leading scientists of the University have established scientific schools of their own.
The Far Eastern State Transport University trains highly qualified specialists in the spheres of transport, energy supply, construction, management and economy. Graduates of the University design and build modern machines and equipment, control transportation process, are engaged in commercial activities in transport and provide international transportations, develop automated control and design systems and build railways, engineering structures and power supply facilities.
The University has a license for training specialists of the following levels of higher education: bachelors, masters and certified specialists.
The University has graduate schools in 45 specialties and 12 branches of science, doctorate in 4 specialties and 3 branches of science. In recent years 6 doctoral dissertation councils for physics, philosophy, economics, psychology, pedagogy and technical sciences has been opened at the University.
Science education at FESTU is a well-structured process. It is one of the best in the Russian Far East. The University has all necessary conditions for every student who has a will for research work.
FESTU is famous for its laboratories and research centers, such as diagnostic lab, laboratory of non-destructive control methods, “Bases and Foundations” research lab, research center “Energy Audit”, research centers of fiber-optic communications, microprocessor control systems, research and innovation center “Resource”, “Technolog” research center, psycho-diagnostic center and information security lab, which has the best equipment in the region. The new center “Vostoktranssertifikatsiya” has been opened. Its main tasks are consulting services, training and certification of works and services for production and use of materials.
“Innovation Center” that was established in cooperation with the university partners is now effectively functioning. It has been organized for servicing high-tech products and promoting them on the market. The first success of this center was signing contracts with the Khabarovsk Union of Entrepreneurs and South Korean corporation “Halla Conkrete”. A significant contribution of the university to the innovative development of the Far Eastern region is confirmed with the diplomas, gold and silver medals received during different exhibitions: “High Technologies. Innovation. Investments”, “The 8th Moscow Salon of Innovations and Investments”, The 12th International Salon of Industrial Property “Archimedes “.
From 2004, the University publishes scientific-theoretical journal “The Humanities & Social Studies in the Far East”. The International editorial board of the journal includes leading researchers from the USA, Japan, China, Spain and Australia.
During the past five years FESTU held more than 50 scientific symposia, conferences and seminars, most of them were international. In October 2009 the 3rd International Symposium of European and Asian Railway Universities was held. It brought together participants from 12 countries and established new levels of international cooperation.
In 2007 FESTU won the “Golden Chariot”, National Prize of Russian transport industry in the prestigious nomination “The Leader of Russian Science in the Field of Transport and Education”.
Organizational Structure of FESTU
Founded in 1937, Far Eastern State Transport University today is a modern centre for innovations and education, one of the best in the Russian Far East.
University graduates create modern machinery and equipment, manage the transport process, develop automated control systems, build railways and engineering structures, work as economists and financiers, are engaged in commercial activities, international transportation, service and tourism industries.
FESTU consists of 10 institutes, 3 faculties, lyceum and Military training centre. The university has 4 branch institutions in the cities across the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation: Svobodny (Amur Oblast), Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Sakhalin Oblast), Tynda (Amur Oblast) and Ussuriysk (Primorsky (Krai).

International cooperation has always been a priority for FESTU. In November 1992, the first enrollment of foreign students began to study at the university: more than 100 Chinese students from Harbin and Changchun.
FESTU provides various facilities for nurturing either artistic or physical talents. FESTU student club is a creative workshop uniting two dozen creative teams and studios. Sport facilities include football field, swimming pool, climbing wall etc.
FESTU labs are among the best in the region. Here are some of them: Microprocessor-based motion control station lab, Brake systems lab, Schneider Electric specialized power lab, Diagnostics and non-destructive testing methods lab, Fiber-optic communication lines center, Information security lab.

Foreign Students
Citizens from all over the world are welcomed to study at FESTU. There are no restrictions on admission to the university on the basis of race or nationality. The main criteria for your training here are knowledge and desire to study.
FESTU trains experts in information technology, economics, transport construction and other innovative industries.
There are about 380 young people from China, the Republic of Korea, the DPRK, Vietnam, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan study at FESTU today. Students attend classes in management, logistics, project management, telecommunications, mechanics, electricity and construction, service and tourism.
Foreign students have equal rights with Russian citizens and study together with Russian students. At the same time they must comply with the immigration rules and FESTU internal rules.
Foreign students live in the dormitories at FESTU campus.
Foreign students must learn Russian language. Each student must have a special “Russian as a foreign language” (TORFL) state certificate of the first level (for undergraduates) and of the second level (for postgraduates). Russian language proficiency will help you in your future professional carrier. Over 260 million people speak Russian all over the world today! It is the most widely spoken language in Europe and the 8th in the world in the number of speakers.
Since 2016, foreigners are required to have a voluntary medical insurance (VMI). VMI must be issued on the first day of stay in the country, regardless of the purpose of entering the territory of the Russian Federation.
Over the years, Russian education (including that obtained at FENU) has become more accessible for foreigners and adapted to various ethnic groups, since studies are being carried out on the specifics of the national psychological characteristics of various people. These studies helped FESTU to create appropriate educational conditions for foreign students.
